In the novel,
All Quiet on the Western Front, Remarque uses the technique of jumping from one idea to another to better help the reader understand what it's like to be at war. It shows the reader that war is never stable and it's an ever changing world. At one point in the story they are relaxing in the dugout and the next moment they are on the front lines fighting for their survival. Remarque use of imagery makes you feel like you're there and can understand more of what the guys at war are going through. Also, while fighting on the front lines, the soldiers realize that both the men on the other side, just like them, are just fighting for their country with all their heart and soul.
