All Quiet on the Western Front

As you read All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, not only the physical injuries come to mind when it comes to war. Throughout the course of the book, flashbacks are used to enhance the mental damage war brings to Paul Baumer. As you read, you realize that little by little soldiers of many nations slowly lose themselves and the human nature they once had. What once was is not the same after coming home from war. But you do find fairly funny actions that are performed by Baumer. By using flashbacks Remarque helped you understand why some soldiers responded the way they did. Some reacted by human nature, while others reacted due to what they learned in boot camp. All Quiet on the Western Front makes you sympathize with the characters and for some real life soldiers because it tells you of how hard and cruel being in a war can be.
