In All Quiet On The Western Front written by Erich Maria Remarque, Paul Baumer a young German soldier is enlisted in the army and tells of his tales in WWI. The narration by Paul normally shows the bleak side of war no matter the situation. Normally each chapter has a reoccurring theme throughout that section for example in chapter 4 it shows the way men have changed and know nothing but the war and the animal instinct required for the war, the drive to survive. By narrating the story like this it shows the ideas of the war instead of just telling what happens in the war and this draws the reader into the story and makes it more interesting to read learning the ideals of the war. Remarque tries to appeal to peoples emotions using ethos and pathos to connect and make people feel sad about what happens to the soldiers and innocent bystanders by describing it in the most gruesome tone possible. You also feel satisfied with the end becuase its dissapointing Paul dies but youre glad he dies in a peaceful quick death and this makes Paul a tragic hero because he dies in the end happy knowing the war is over and that he served his duty
