The Martian Chronicles
In the book The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury, many connections can be made between the colonization of Mars and the colonization of North America. When man first came to Mars, people were sent out to search the land and find out if conditions were suited for human life to take place. This is comparable to when the Europeans first sent explorers throughout North America to study the land. As humans started living on Mars, they changed the land so it was similar to life on Earth instead of adapting traits already known to Mars. This is similar to the colonizers in North America who brought over traits from Europe instead of taking on the Native American ways of life. Another similarity is the harsh treatment towards the Martians from the humans and the harsh treatment towards the Native Americans from the Europeans. The harsh treatment towards the natives includes killing them, simply out of fear and to become the dominant being in the area.
