Nickel and Dimed- Julia Glover
In the novel, Nickle and Dimed, Barbara Ehrenreich descovers the harsh reality of working minimum wage jobs in Flordia, Maine, and Minisota. The jobs she goes through are a maid, waitress, at Wal-Mart, and a food service worker in a nursing home. Barbara keeps watch on how her coworkers situations and the way the economy in the U.S treats them in a negative way, as it treats her the same. In the tough place she is in in her life she feels and observes the way poverty is affecting everyone and herself. Her main fear is having enough money to get by and she does a good job potreying that to the reader with her tone. Chapter after chapter, and month by month Barabara struggles to find food, shelter, and transportation on just minimum wage pay. Since Ehrenruich feels what its like to by physically and mentally drained by a low paying job that barley gets her by, she proposes change to take place. She thinks that health care should be provided for low paying employees, and that employers should pay more for the work that is being done. After reading this novel, I feel like somethings in life are going to be hard and sometimes you must struggle through them no matter how hard it is. Also i believe it is better to be working hard to succeed then not to. This book really showed how rude employers can be to there employees even when they are not being payed enough for the work they endure. I think that having health care and bennifits givin to low wage workers is a good idea so they can have proper living conditions. Throughout the book, Barabara meets many people as she travels from state to state who help her learn the ropes at her verias jobs. This book is very interesting, and the way the author makes the book flow keeps the reader wanting more.
