All Quiet on the Western Front skips topics between Chapters using a 20th Century writing technique in the story to keep the reader interested. The author, Erich Remarque never dwells on a subject long whether that subject is a firefight between opposing trenches or the effect of the war on the protagonist’s (Paul’s) own generation. This technique while captivating the reader, also allows for a broader range of material to be covered, giving the reader a more complete experience, and allowing the reader a fuller comprehension of the material. Also, Remarque’s use of meticulous detail allows the reader to recreate the story, and feel as if they are with Paul on the front line. Remarque’s detail allows the reader to feel, smell, and see the scene described by the narrator. These writing techniques allow Remarque to clearly and effectively communicate the brutality as well as the camaraderie during the time of war.
