The Martian Chronicles
The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury is a novel about human colonization on Mars. Earth sends multiple expeditions out to discover Mars and report back. After three unsuccessful expeditions, the fourth arrives to discover nearly all the Martians have died due to a disease brought to Mars by humans. Like the Martians in this novel, many Native Americans were wiped out by illnesses introduced by explorers and colonists. This is not the only similarity between this novel and colonization on Earth. In both situations, there were people who came to the new land to escape the old. Then, there were people who wanted to civilize the new land and replace the culture of the natives with their own culture. The humans took over Mars just like America was taken over. They saw newly discovered land as an opportunity and took advantage of it. This opportunity could have been used to blend cultures and live together. Instead, natives and their culture were pushed aside to make room for a new civilization.
