All Quiet On the Western Front

All Quiet on the Western Front is told by Paul Baumer. Paul and his friends enlisted in the German army after being provoked by their teacher, Kantorek, giving an inspiring lecture. With ten weeks of reality under their belts, they come to the brutal truth of what war can really be- terrifying. After all the visions of honor and glory, they are left with the nightmares of physical danger lingering among them.
Through their journey, they entail many hardships. Paul experiences friends dying, disease, and injury. He comes to realize he must numb his emotions if he is to stay sane. Paul is the only one out of his friends who is still alive in the fall of 1918. He is eager for peace and comfort; but, yet he realizes the improbability considering war has become his lifestyle. In October 1918, Paul is killed. On that day, the army report stated: "All quiet on the Western Front." As Paul lies dead, he looks as if finally he is at peace.
