ND from Russell Henkel

Nickel and Dimed

In Barbara Ehrenreich’s Nickel and Dimed she goes out into the world of a minimum wage worker to see if it is possible to live on the wages they are provided.  Without a degree or previous job experience she finds that it is extremely hard to find a job at all. She also comes to the realization that with the wage she is making she cannot find a safe and affordable house. While working as a waitress in Key West she finds out that those who work jobs like hers have to work very strenuous hours and must deal with severe fatigue. Also while working as a maid a young co-worker of hers sprains her ankle and refuses doctors treatment due to her lack of money. Barbara sees that people in poverty don’t have the same privileges that others do. These things show her how much people; including her, don’t appreciate the little things we have that otherss do not. In the “Evaluation Chapter” Barbara Ehrenreich believes that she has done well at her jobs. She also believes that the rich ignore the poor and the crucial job they do for society.
Question 2) My perception of blue-collar workers was heavily reinforced after this book. I have always had great appreciation for those who work as waiters, sales-people, maids, and etc. I had not realized how hard they work though. After seeing her struggle to find a place to live and to get food it makes me appreciate the hard work done by the blue-collar workers. I believe everyone should treat them with respect due to the fact that they are doing something for you, the least you could do is be polite.
