When you first look at the synopsis of this book you think... oh just another boring history book. You are very mistaken. This book, although about World War I, has an intimate detail to it. You specifically follow a solider and his friends through the war. They talk about the good times and the very bad with very personal descriptions; most of these descriptions are backed up by facts. The solider named Paul is the character that we follow not because he is the main character but because we can relate to him because of the details given.
For example Paul was stuck in the trenches for days with a dying man. Now this would happen often with soldiers. The difference with this book is that it went into explicit detail as to how he felt, what sounds the dying man was making. Details that a history book couldn't give you. This book is commonly called a historical fiction book. It is exactly that, a fiction book with historical facts woven in.
Many people are not into reading a history text book, but throw some interesting characters in there with a personal connection and you have it made. That is exactly what Erich Maria Remarque did. He created Paul Brumer a character that we could relate to and put him in the middle of WWI. I enjoyed this book thoroughly not because it was about war, but because I felt a personal connection with Paul that made me want to keep reading. I wanted to see if he was safe, if he was alive. That is what a good novel does.
