In Remarque's All Quiet On The Western Front, each chapter has a certain focus and all have different ideas, that are not in any particular order, and jump all around. This technique of jumping from one idea to another, enhances the telling of the war. It shows how everything during the war is scattered all over, when Paul and his "crew" have to get up and go from one place to the next, each day. They hardly get any resting time, and if they do, they can hardly ever sleep because of the fear.Life on the front is also described as being very unsanitary. They always had to del with the lice, and fat rats trying to eat their food. Also just all the blood, and the horrible stench. When Paul goes away to training camp, he finds Russian soldiers next to him, who pick through the Germans garbage for food. The spirit of the brotherhood among them touches Paul, when he goes to leave back for the front, he gives them 2 of his potato cakes sent from his mom. The emotions that these soldiers go through are so overwhelming. Especially for the new recruits. The summer of 1918, was said to be the most bloody and horrrific.Their was also alot of imagery in this book. Remarque does a very good job on describing the imagery of the war, and how brutal it really was. The imagery in nature, was also very well described, the flowers, the forest, and the stream. The way that Remarque uses his words with such elegance, and sometimes full of sorrow. Towards the end of the war, Paul ends up being the only ones left of his fellow classmates. He is finally killed in October of 1918 on a quiet and peaceful day. When he died his face was calm, as if he was glad it has finally come to an end.
