All Quiet on the Western Front
In All Quiet on the Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque, the jumping from one idea to another in each chapter enhances the story. It gives the story more depth, and makes it more then just a tale of all the battles. It also gives insight into the soldiers mind, as thoughts and ideas jump around rather then following a chronological order. It gives insight into the confusion of war as well. Things often move to fast for you to follow with clarity. One of the ideas presented in the novel that I found interesting was the idea that the soldiers doing the actual fighting didn't have any conflicts with the soldiers from the opponents side. They were just enlisted under the rulers who had the problem. Also it was discussed in the book how both sides viewed their cause as right, and the opponents cause as wrong. It was interesting to see that often times both fighting sides didn't know the exact cause of war. They were just fighting because if they didn’t they would be killed.
