Remarque writes his famous war novel, "All Quiet on the Western Front" in segments of ideas, events, and feelings, instead of in chronological order. This was a wise move, because it gives insight on what it would be like to actually be in world war one. Its not just a nice story, it is a window into the mind of a soldier. Writing the book in this form shows how the war effected a young man's world view. It uncovers a soldiers thoughts, emotions, and activities in a very personal way. This writing style sets "All Quiet on the Western Front" apart from all other war books, and makes it unique and insightful.

Through the Character, Paul, and his emotions and feeling to the world he is surounded by, we can clearly understand Remarque's opinions about World War One. it was waste of these boys lives, to recruit them for the army at the beginning of their adult lives, before they had a chance to experience the world, and that the generation before them sent them out with thoughts of romantic patriotism that didn't actually exist. The truth is the war was cruel and harsh and changed a soldier"s life forever. Even if Paul had not died at the end he could never have had the normal civilian life he would have had if he had never been a soldier.
