In Erich Remarque's, All Quiet on the Western Front, a soldier by the name of Paul is thrown into the frontlines of WWI. Paul is always moving around a lot and jumping from place to place in the war much like how the author jumps around in the book. The author uses this jumping around technique to keep the reader interested and to explain to the reader how quickly one thing can change from one to another during a war and how the soldiers are affected. Much like how when the new recruitments came in to Pauls division, to begin with they had high morals and convidence but as soon as the first shell hit they turned into cowards and lost there mind often getting them killed. Towards the end of the novel Paul was the only one of his division left alive which was most likely due to him jumping from the frontlines to back home because of his interaction with a poisonous gas. All in All the book Jumps around as a technique to show a change over time and how the soldiers are affected both mentally and physically.
