The Martian Chronicles
In The Martian Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury, America colonizes Mars in a way similar to the way America itself was colonized. They begin by sending rockets to Mars as an experiment, similar to expeditions across the Pacific to America.  When the rockets get to Mars there is much fighting between the Martians and the Americans (Europeans and Native Americans.) After a few different attempts, Americans were able to colonize Mars. This may be because of the diseases spread by the earlier trips. Americans gave chicken pox to the Martians, wiping out the vast majority of the population. This is similar to when the Europeans spread diseases in America that exterminated many of the natives. Also the desire to leave the homeland is similar. The African-Americans wanted to leave America in order to gain social acceptance and live as equals, and the Europeans wanted to leave in order to have their own religious freedom.  In the chapter “The Naming of Names” the way Earthians change names is similar to the way Europeans changed the Native American names.
