The Martian Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury, is a novel about the colonization of Mars by Americans. Throughout the novel, Americans arrive by rocket to Mars and impose themselves on the Martians or Martian cities. Much like the colonization of America, the native people are shoved aside by the newcomers. However, in their first attempts, the Americans are not successful in establishing residence, as the Martians both outnumber and overpower them, and so eliminate them. This scenario is different from the colonization of the Americas, as the Europeans had better technologies than the Native Americans. As time goes on, most of the Martians have died out from Chicken Pox brought from the first colonizers. This is extremely similar to when Europeans colonized America and brought with them diseases that caused many Native Americans to die, as they had no immunity to the new diseases. This allows the new arrivals to establish homes and then towns without being stopped. Much like when America was colonized by Europeans, the new colonists to Mars have little respect for the buildings and other architecture established by the Martians and have no problem destroying it. Even children of the settlers began to crush Martian bodies and use their bones as instruments, showing little thoughtfulness of other cultures. However, different from the colonization of America, on Mars, humans are called back to Earth in order to help fight in a nuclear war. After the war, some families return with the idea that they will now become Martians, not impose themselves and their culture on this other world.
