AQ from Peter Fleming
Erich Romarques Literary technique of having separate chapter focuses does a good job of giving the reader a taste of the chaos of war. It creates a sense of the unknown, in that the story could take you from boot camp, to the frontlines, home, then back to the front again, all the while keeping the reader in a state of suspense and enthrallment. The only negative side to this technique is that it is very easy to become confused and due to the confusion, the moral of the story might not be learnt. In order to Ensure that the morales of the story were learned despite the confusing technique, Romarques used very graphic imagery, to imply that war was a sad waste of human lives and resources and that humans in general should work together to prevent future violence.
