All Quiet on the Western Front
In the novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, each chapter changes topic while still focusing on one man, Paul Baumer, a soldier fighting in World War One. Topics change from the struggles and suffering Paul along with other soldiers underwent on the front line, to celebrations after new supplies were brought to them. Jumping from one topic to the next helps the reader understand how the soldiers never knew what to expect with every new day they faced. The imagery used to describe the front line in this novel such as the world being “unendurable” and “wild with anguish, filled with terror” depict the boys lives as unbearable and shows their loss of innocence as they face the brutality of war.
