Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich is a very serious story about a well off woman in society simulating the life of a lower class worker in 3 different states (Florida, Maine, and Minnesota). Ehrenreich has many concerns throughout the story. One of her reacurring fears is not having enough money for food and her own physical well being. She does a good job of portraying to the reader, the life of hundreds of thousands of workers in the United States. Throughout the story Barbara meets many interesting and unique people. In Florida the reader meets such co-workers as Gail, a middle age waitress who helps Barbara get used to working at the Hearthside Restaurant. You also meet George the 19 year old Czech dishwasher at Jerry's who is fired for supposedly taking food out of the dry storage room. In Maine Barbara meets Pete, a friendly cook who talks with Barbara on his cigarette breaks. Ehrenreich's last work destination is Minnesota. There she gets a job at a Menards-like houseware store. while there she talks with Caroline, a friends aunt, who tells her how she also moved to Florida and lived the lower class lifestyle. I think it's Ehrenreich's use of fine details and descriptive words that makes this book, make the reader feel as if they know her and the other characters. |
