Nickel and Dimed
Within the novel, “Nickel and Dimed”, Barbara Ehrenreich uncovers the secrets on what it’s like to live off minimum wage and the methods of managing money with what little is given. Traveling to three cities in the United States, Ehrenreich discovers quickly how health care is not covered with these low paid jobs, leaving people to defend for themselves. For what most take for granted such as gas, shelter, and food, Ehrenreich no longer has available easily. Living off of basically zero, she realizes the social inequality that comes along with being within the bottom percentage of the economy. In her adventures in the life of a minimum waged person, Ehrenreich proves how physically and mentally exhausting this type of life is and how no one can safely live on such low pay when the prices within the economy are this high.
Question 17: Having any job at all is definitely better than having no job. Although it’s not much, it would keep you sane. Living each month off of unemployment money wouldn’t get a person anywhere, but deeper in the rut they’ve gotten into. This book better informs me of the struggles people face within the economy and how socially unfair actions take place.
